How we approach roof cleaning on Long Island.
Those black streaks running down your roof are gloeocapsa magma — a blue-green algae that eats the limestone filler in asphalt shingles. Left untreated for 5+ years, it can shave 20–30% off your shingle life. The fix isn't a pressure washer (which strips granules and voids warranties) — it's a soft wash.
We're RCIA certified (Roof Cleaning Institute of America), which means our method is specifically the one Owens Corning, CertainTeed, and GAF list as approved for roof cleaning. A 2–3% sodium hypochlorite solution with a surfactant kills the algae, gets rinsed, and results in a shingle that looks 10 years newer the same afternoon.
Moss is a separate problem on older roofs. We treat moss with a different alkaline cleaner, let it dwell 48 hours, then return to soft-rinse. Don't try to pressure-wash moss off — you'll take shingles with it.
